Wildflowers are Blooming in California!
The strong Jasmine smell in the air was an unexpected surprise as I stepped out of the car. The desert was covered in purple, yellow and white flowers of all different kinds making the trip a definite success. I had decided a couple of days earlier to make the drive (2 1/2 hours) to the Anza Borrego State Park to see the wildflowers at sunrise and to witness the “super bloom”. In order to arrive in time, we had to leave the house at 2:30am which even for me was early! Driving down in the dark on the curvy dark road with a full moon and nobody on the road made it feel like a true adventure. Since I had not been there before we made a stop at the visitor center (in the dark) to pick up a map and figure out where to go. This is what we saw…let me say that the wildflowers are blooming in California!
Since Marty was not allowed off the paved roads, we only stayed long enough for the sun to come up and then we started our drive home. On the way, we stopped on the side of the road to do a bit of exploring. The ground was now mostly cactus but the ground was covered in tiny purple flowers.
This was a great trip and worth the early start and long drive. Marty is a great traveller and adventure partner. If you have not been to Anza Borrego, now would be the perfect time to go. I suggest going early to miss the crowds; especially on the weekend.
See you on the trail!
